He forced himself to keep walking toward his truck when all he wanted to do was march right back into the house.

Maggie’s house.

It’d taken every ounce of strength not to react when the sheriff had told them what had happened over the last twenty or so hours. He’d wanted to push his way past her family and friends, pull her into his arms and make sure she was okay.

But he couldn’t. He didn’t have any right. She’d be fine now that Greeley’s plan was stopped and the man was behind bars. She had everything and everyone she needed right inside her kitchen.

He whistled softly and G.W. came to the corral’s edge. The horse waited patiently as Landon opened the gate and led him to the trailer. It took a firm nudge and a verbal command to get the animal inside. He tossed his head and neighed sharply, telling Landon what he thought of the idea.

“Yeah, pal, I hate leaving, too, but it’s time for us to be going.” Landon closed the trailer, slapping the heated metal sides as he headed back toward the truck’s cab. “Past time.”

“Without saying goodbye?”

Landon’s hand froze on the door handle for a moment, letting the light breeze carry her words and her clean, sweet scent to him. Then he grabbed the handle in a tight grip and opened the door.

Settling himself behind the wheel, he pulled the door shut with a hard tug. “Seeing how you fired me yesterday, not once but twice, I thought it best to get on my way.”

She moved to the side of his truck, and thrust a sheet of paper through the open window. “It doesn’t matter I know the truth?”

The paper shook so hard, he could barely make out the Texas state seal on the letterhead.

Ah, hell.

He reached for it, but she yanked it back. “How can you leave with me thinking what you said was true?”

“Because it is true.” He tightened his grip on the steering wheel. “It doesn’t matter what some judge determined. My wife and child are dead, and it’s my fault.”

“It’s not your fault,” Maggie cried. “You can’t shoulder the blame for a stupid, tragic accident. It never should’ve happened, but it did, and you suffered a loss no one should have to endure.”

“It was my job to keep them safe.” Ignoring the need to look at her one last time, Landon forced himself to stare straight ahead. “I failed them. To be responsible again for someone else... I can’t do it.”

“You can’t live in the past. Do you think your wife or daughter would want you torturing yourself this way?”

Landon swallowed hard, but didn’t speak.

“Landon—”

“You’re going to be okay, Maggie,” he said, feeing as if he had to push the words from his mouth. Jamming the keys into the ignition, he gunned the engine to life. “The ranch is safe, and you’ve got plenty of help to keep things running smoothly. There’s nothing more I can do for you.”

“You can stay.”

Her soft plea floated into the interior of the truck and branded him deeply.
